Phenol solvent

Phenol is an important organic chemical raw material with the following characteristics and uses:

• Chemical properties. The chemical formula of phenol is C6H6O. It is a colorless or slightly red needle-like crystal with a distinctive odor. It is slightly soluble in water at room temperature but can mix with water in any proportion when the temperature exceeds 65°C.

• Uses. Phenol can be used to produce various chemical products and intermediates such as phenolic resin and bisphenol A. It is also used as a solvent and disinfectant. In the medical field, dilute solutions of phenol are commonly used for disinfecting surgical instruments. Its derivatives, such as halogenated phenols, nitrophenols, and alkylphenols, can be used in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fragrances, paints, dyes, paint removers, petroleum additives, and wood preservatives.
• Safety. Phenol is highly toxic and corrosive, with strong corrosive effects on the skin and mucous membranes. Prolonged exposure to air may cause partial oxidation, resulting in a pink discoloration. Therefore, appropriate safety measures, such as wearing protective gloves and goggles, should be taken when using phenol to avoid direct contact with the skin and mucous membranes.
